Being located in the Central part of Florida, which is known to be the most tornado prone State in the US, it is sill safe to say that Melbourne is lucky to have a humid subtropical climate. They have very defined rain fall season that usually comes during the months of June to September. These months are also said to be the months which are most at risk of tropical cyclones landfall and when thunderstorms, through lightning, lead to the death of many of the residents of the state. On the other hand, there is a decrease in the air quality that makes the sky turn white due to the dust coming from Africa which greatly affects the state during midsummer.
Melbourne has been under many situations that they were declared under State of Calamity due to the frequent hurricanes that come during special months. Here are some of the historical hurricanes that made great depression the Melbourne, Florida:
During the year 1871, there were two instances that huge hurricanes have stormed the town. This was on the 18th and 25th of August. On August 18, 1871, a 100mph hurricane has passed by Melbourne while heading to the north. After a week, August 25, a 90 mph hurricane again passed by the town which headed North West.
In the year 1873, a Category 1 hurricane hits from the South West direction with a 90mph speed of wind after hitting feet myers as a Category 3 hurricane. This happened on Oct 7 of the year 1873.
Oct 20, 1876, it was reported that a 90mph hurricane’s was over Melbourne’s area but was still in under a great debate due to the earlier reports made on Sept 15 of the same year having the hurricane’s gusts from the east direction carrying a 100mph wind.
A heavy flooding occurred during August 29, 1880 that greatly devastated the whole State, most especially the town of Melbourne.
There was a 90mph hurricane seen from South Southeast of the area on July 28, 1926.
On Aug 27 of the year 1928, a 100mph hurricane approached the South leaving a lot of casualties and damages in the area. On the same year during Sept 16, another hurricane with a 130mph wind struck ashore 40 miles going to the south.
June 24, 1945, a very huge hurricane that holds 125mph of wind devastated the area leading Tornadoes to come after. This happened 3 o’clock in the morning.
Hurricane KING caused minor damage in the area in the year 1950.
Hurricane David gave out damages when it hit the town carrying a 90mph winds.
During August 2, 1995, Hurricane Erin brings minor damage in the area when it hit the town carrying 85mph winds without any estimated power hits.
Hurricane Irene hits the area on Oct 16, 1999 moving north with a sustained wind of 75mph with some heavy rains. This calamity caused no major damage in the area.
Hurricane Frances brought heavy rains and damage in the area carrying 105mph wind. It hit the town on Sept 5, 2004.
The same year, another hurricane named Jeanne hit the town with its powerful winds of 120mph. This happened exactly 22 days after Hurricane Frances.
